Many men feel at a loss when the time comes to choose an engagement ring. The best way to make sure that she likes it, is to choose the ring together. But many men want it to be a surprise, so here are some suggestions:
- Notice what kind of jewelry she wears now. Does she favor yellow gold, or white gold and platinum? What kind of style does she like: simple, contemporary, vintage style or big and bold?
- Has she given you any hints about what she likes and dislikes? Maybe she has talked about a friend’s ring or pointed out things in a jewelry store window or catalog.
- What looks good on her hand? Wide bands make fingers look shorter; elongated shapes can lengthen how a finger looks; very delicate styles can look lost on large hands, and too large and bold can over-power smaller hands.
- What shape stone might she like? Round diamonds are the number one choice because they sparkle the most, but many women like the square princess cut, the elongated marquise, pear or oval shape, or even the heart shape.
- What kind of lifestyle does she have? If she uses her hands a lot or is a nurse, she might prefer a lower setting or something channel set, so that she won’t snag or scratch things. A fancy or large style might be inappropriate for some work settings.
- What is her finger size? Try to borrow or get one of her friends to borrow a ring that fits her, so that the jeweler can determine her size. But remember that the ring fingers on each hand typically are not the same size—make sure you get a ring she wears on her left hand! And if you can’t figure out the right size, the ring can always be sized after you give it to her.
- Do you still want to surprise her but give her a choice too? Then present her with a loose diamond, and come in together later to choose the setting.
